I have been hesitant to give you rubrics because I don't want you to be limited in your conception of these projects. That said, it is important for you to have a rubric for this project so you know what is expected. So that you are involved in setting the scope of the projects, I would like you to help design the rubric. The final rubric will have 4 points. I would like us to outline together what the target point should look like (3 out of 4).
\n
\nThe project will be a 20-minute presentation, either live or pre-recorded (or a mixture of the two) about a pre-1900 musical topic. You can use relevant modern music to contrast to your topic, but we are primarily looking at older forms of music, or modern versions of music that is based in older traditions.
\n
\nPlease list what elements you think would make a good presentation (depth of ideas, use of media, activities for the group designed to teach about your topic, etc etc etc).
\n
\nI am excited to read your thoughts.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"48781617","body":"I think that the expectations should be that once the presentation is over, the audience should have a large amount of knowledge on the subject, including the basics, but also some fun facts about the type of music.","dateCreated":"1325703646","smartDate":"Jan 4, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"alexd375","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/alexd375","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"48792993","body":"It would be best to just have a list of necessary criteria for the project. \nInfo Fits Project (pre-1900 to present)
\nUse of Resources
\nLength
\nClear Intro\/Conclusion

We need to be thinking about our presentations. What topics are you considering? Remember, we are looking mainly at music before 1900. That said, much of the music you might present on will have connections to modern day. The native American music we heard today is current in that it is still being performed and it is still evolving, but it is rooted in old traditions. \nHere is the clip we watched today in class of Bobby McFerrin demonstrating the power of the pentatonic scale.
\n
\nWhat is going on here? We touched on several theories in class. Explore one or more of those. What makes us able to anticipate the notes of this scale? Is it fundamental and ingrained in us at some biological level? Is it cultural and therefore learned? Discuss.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"46549228","body":"In my thoughts about this, I keep on going back to the theory we learned about earlier in the year. In our youngest years as babies and small children, we hear a variety of tones, notes and progressions, either from music or miscellaneous sounds, etc. I believe the idea that our brains have integrated and woven the pathways that allow us (in this case, the audience) to discern what pitches come next in the pentatonic sequence is key. This brings me to the topic of culture. I don't believe that cultural up-bringings have anything to do with having the ability to recognize the patterns. In the very beginning, Bobby gives the audience two pitches. Immediately, I believe the brain recognizes the tonal space and difference between the two pitches, and is able to figure the pentatonic pattern due to previously created passage ways in the brain. I believe the ability for this to happen is fundamental and biologically ingrained in our brains.","dateCreated":"1321566211","smartDate":"Nov 17, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"piderman246","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/piderman246","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"46634120","body":"I agree and also think that it is notes that we hear as a really little baby so its kind of engraved in our head so we can recognize it. I also think that the way our minds are musically inclined all have a same base, specifically made by society and culture. In theory, we could all have the same pentatonic scale in our minds, all being harnessed in different ways. This probably doesnt make sense but I'm just thinking it could happen....-Aidan","dateCreated":"1321888378","smartDate":"Nov 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"thexx","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/thexx","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1321663940\/thexx-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"46752394","body":"They couldn't have known the notes for sure; they probably made educated guesses about what the notes were. Prior exposure to music would have helped them guess that the first not was the base note. This probably helped them in guessing the notes of the scale. Also, the relationships among the lengths of his jumps probably helped them figure out the intervals between the notes. He gave the first two notes, and they were a whole step apart. The note above those two was represented by a jump with a length equal to that of the jumps between the other two notes. This suggested that this note was also a whole step apart from the note next to it. So far, they had a scale of three notes, each of them one whole step apart from the one(s) next to it. The next note was represented by a slightly farther jump than the rest of them. That suggested that the note had a slightly greater interval than a whole step from the note beside it. A note 2 whole steps down would sound unusual and non-traditional. A note 1 1\/2 steps down would sound right. I think a lot of this thinking happened pretty quickly and subconsciously. I think they probably applied this same sort of reasoning to the last note.","dateCreated":"1321900367","smartDate":"Nov 21, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"whoisme","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/whoisme","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"48991125","body":"Like others have said, I think that these notes are just naturally ingrained in our mind, and we associate them together.
