It is challenging for me to give each group my full attention when my time is split between so many of you, and it is hard for us to manage the switches between days we have the jazz band students and days that we don't. Have you been struck by similar frustrations? What is your take-away from the class? Is it valuable for you? Several possibilities have been discussed in music dept meetings. None of this is anywhere near decided for next year yet. Could you please respond to each of the following:
\n
\nWhat if chamber music were by audition?
\nWhat if chamber music didn't meet during the school day but rather in the evening?
\nWhat if chamber music groups, instead of meeting all together in class, met once per week like the jazz combos do, right after school?
\n15 students have expressed interest in joining chamber music next year. How could the class be organized so that the needs of 15 students are being met in the context of chamber music? How can I be sure that those students are all working their hardest?
\n
\nI would appreciate any input you have.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"38662822","body":"I don't know about auditions...maybe, if there were going to be, it could determine which group we'd be in, not whether or not we "made the class." Then perhaps there could be different groups at different levels.
\n
\nPersonally, I'd love to meet in the evenings. More time at school for other things and we might not feel so rushed. But I don't know how that would work with everyone's schedules.
\n
\nI think once a week isn't enough unless it's a long, hard-core rehearsal and everyone was going to learn the music really well soon off....he he he...like it should be. But 45 min. once a week probably wouldn't be enough. But maybe that's just me.
\n
\n15?!?! Yayyyy!! :) Perhaps the first term, you might want to assign music and groups and who's with who and set goals and deadlines on certain dates, just to make sure everything happens efficiently, and then give us more leeway afterward, once we see what works and what doesn't. Maybe you could have us give preferences as to what sort of chamber group we want to be in and then you could see if you could make most of our top few choices work. May or may not work, I don't know.","dateCreated":"1304697433","smartDate":"May 6, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"violin914","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/violin914","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"38720818","body":"I also don't agree with the auditions idea, because chamber music can have multiple levels of musicians and different ages.
\n
\nFor some people, the evening might be a good idea, but there are also sports games, dance classes and play rehearsals.
\n
\nAfter school would be better, but would interfere with clubs and would not allow for as much time. This might be good because we would really use the time that we had and would come more prepared because we would know we had less time.
\n
\nI think that the best option would be to still have the class, but instead of Mr. Cohen rotating to the different practice areas the different ensembles would have to go to him. He could have the groups report to the big room at specific times and have them present their piece and then work on phrasing ect. and give them a goal for the next time. And yes, agreed, "YAY" for 15 people!","dateCreated":"1304883501","smartDate":"May 8, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"rotts","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/rotts","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1286927024\/rotts-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"38817860","body":"I don't know how i feel about auditions, maybe if they were to see how enthusiastic the musician was about being in chamber music as well as to evaluate their level of playing.
\nI don't believe that chamber meeting after school would be a very good idea because it would be harder for people to attend due to clubs and other activities.
\nI think that we could organize the students into groups based on their level of playing and abilities. and as for the working part, at some point you have to trust that students are doing what they are suppose to. however, if you run into continuous issues with students not working and not practicing when they are suppose to, then you could strongly suggest that they are not in that class next year, or you could give them extra work to do so they would have to make up the time that they lost in class.
\n
\nI don't think it would be a good idea for chamber to meet only once a week because it would mean less time to work on a piece that a musician had at the time with Mr. Cohen or any other chamber music teacher. you could argue that they would have more practice time for the problem areas of the piece that they and the teacher found last time but one week is a lot of practice time.","dateCreated":"1305042481","smartDate":"May 10, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"roodledoodle2012","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/roodledoodle2012","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1287532395\/roodledoodle2012-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"39394732","body":"I would not mind auditions, I suppose. I would worry a great deal about them, but I think that because it is a high performance class, akin to the Madrigal choir, we should have auditions. However, we should be able to pick our own piece; we get to pick our own pieces for the class. I feel that by choosing our audition piece, we can show our passion for that piece, and thus our musical skills in phrasing, etc. Everyone is at different levels in the class, and I fear a standardized piece would not show everyone's individual musical strengths.
\n
\nEvening Chamber Music meetings would not work well for me. I would much prefer them to be classes directly after school, as we discussed in class.
\n
\nAs for the 15 students, I think that a seniority-based leader system would work well. They would almost be like TAs, only just taking the class and not correcting work. We would be a part of each small group and keep the students on track, and notify you (Cohen) about any points of interest, including students not doing work or doing an especially good job with it.","dateCreated":"1306079894","smartDate":"May 22, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"ArtesanaSima","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/ArtesanaSima","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1285727451\/ArtesanaSima-lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]},{"id":"38393576","dateCreated":"1304304898","smartDate":"May 1, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Mr_Cohen","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Mr_Cohen","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1317133206\/Mr_Cohen-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":true,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/rockport-public-schools-music.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/38393576"},"dateDigested":1532644864,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Post 30 - No Post","description":"There was no post last week.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"37515988","dateCreated":"1302582836","smartDate":"Apr 11, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Mr_Cohen","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Mr_Cohen","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1317133206\/Mr_Cohen-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":true,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/rockport-public-schools-music.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/37515988"},"dateDigested":1532644864,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Post 29 - Musical Expectations","description":"Watch this video of Bobby McFerrin at a neuroscience conference demonstrating our sense of musical expectations. What is your take on this? Do you think humans are hardwired for music and that we have an innate understanding of the pentatonic scale (5-tone scale)? Does that scale represent essential relationships that resonate for us? Or do you think we have been conditioned by our life's experiences to recognize it? Or do you have another explanation altogether?

I think that in a way, we are conditioned. I mean, when he jumped over a little bit, no one sang a flat or sharp (they all sung in the same key without knowing what a key was, like if he was on a G they all jumped to F and not F#).
\nBut as far as how it affects us, I aggree with rotts in that for the most part, it's in us already. But like what the composers at the Dona Nobis concert were saying, I think it's different for everyone (whether atonal or chords that aren't in harmony sounds very discomforting or not maybe is up to the person's exposure or what mood they're feeling at the time and what they want to hear).","dateCreated":"1305764613","smartDate":"May 18, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"violin914","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/violin914","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"39395390","body":"I thought the first bit of that was comical. However, I think people are conditioned to the 5-tone scale.
\nIn agreement with rotts, I also find significance in babies enjoying certain musical relationships between notes. And yet I think that for the most part, we are encouraged to prefer them later on in life. Some of Bela Bartok's piano music does not completely follow the normal scales, and after listening to it a fair bit, it has grown on me. We can definitely learn to enjoy the sound of other musical relations.","dateCreated":"1306081511","smartDate":"May 22, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"ArtesanaSima","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/ArtesanaSima","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1285727451\/ArtesanaSima-lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]},{"id":"37249454","dateCreated":"1302145511","smartDate":"Apr 6, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Mr_Cohen","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Mr_Cohen","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1317133206\/Mr_Cohen-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":true,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/rockport-public-schools-music.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/37249454"},"dateDigested":1532644864,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Post 28 - New Term, No Post This Week","description":"Sorry everyone.
